The Nap

I have come to the conclusion that my life would be perfect ~ I am not exaggerating here ~ if I could take a nap every day.  Every. Day.

This would be pretty nice.  You know if that pesky kid weren’t in the picture.

Actually I’m not picky.  I love our bed and it is not even on a beach.  The only thing standing in my way is Micah, who doesn’t nap.  You see, it is hard to take a nap every day when you have a three year old who doesn’t share your passion.

Recently, however, I have figured out that even 10 minutes of semi-sleep is a huge step in getting me through those afternoon hours.  You stay at home moms know what I’m talking about.  Those magical hours between 3:00 pm and whenever your husband or significant other gets home.  The kids are bored, they are kind of sick of you, you are kind of sick of them, you have to make something for dinner, they are bored.  Please tell me you know what I’m talking about.

Back to 10 minutes of sleep.  I have recently been accomplishing this by waiting until Savannah naps, setting Micah up with a DVD on our computer in our bed, and sort of sleeping next to him.  I never really fall fully asleep, but even just being in that semi-sleep rest stage seems to really increase my afternoon energy level (and patience level if we are being completely honest).  Today my plan was thwarted by Ben working from home (in our bedroom) until after Savannah woke up from her nap.  Someday I should write a post about how much I hate Ben working from home.

Once Ben left to go to some meetings, I decided that semi-nap had to happen even if I now had two kids who don’t always get along in confined spaces.  Over the next twenty minutes I experienced what I believe to be one of the weirdest naps ever.  I had to share my story with you.

It all started when I was laying (lying?) there peacefully in my semi-sleep state while Bob the Builder successfully (Yes we can!!) built something on the computer.  The nap festivities started out with Savannah deciding to launch herself onto my face while I was sleeping.  What a way to wake up!

Next up there is normal screaming about someone touching someone else.  Honestly I’m not even sure what was going on, but this was by no means strange behavior.  I mumbled something about leaving each other alone.  That is when Savannah crawled over me and sat very, very close to the edge of the bed.  I went back to sleep.

Now I know you think you know what is coming next when I said she was very, very close to the edge of the bed, but believe me ~ you do not.

The next adventure in my nap today involved this:

You see I have a very small pot of vaseline on my bedside table to use on my lips at night.  Nothing works better moisturizing all night, in my opinion.  So picture me laying there peacefully with no fighting because I am finally in between them, when something sticky smears across my face.  I bolt up and see Savannah holding the Vaseline jar in one hand with her other hand completely full of Vaseline.  After I take in that sight, I notice that her legs are covered in it, her arms are covered in it, my duvet cover has a nice chunk of it sitting there staring at me.  Oh wait, her hair is full of it, and it does appear that she attempted to put some on her lips.  You know, where it actually goes.

I immediately restrained her hands, and yelled for Micah to get me a towel.  He must of been confused, because he ran around the room going, “I don’t know where a towel is!!”  After much direction, he was able to locate one and bring it to me.  On the bright side, Savannah’s skin has never been softer.

For some reason at this point I decided the attempt at a nap needed to continue.  I put Savannah back over by Micah, moved the Vaseline out of reach, folded the duvet cover down so the greasy part wasn’t near me, and closed me eyes.  Two minutes later Savannah drops an elbow on my nose with her full body weight.  Nap over!

The moral of the story is this:  semi-naps are important.  Doing them with an 18 month old in the bed doesn’t seem to work out so great.

Oh yeah, then Savannah fell off the bed by her own action.  At that p0int the nap was over and abandoning the bed was our only option.  Whew!  I have never had a less restful nap in my life!  Good thing she’s cute.
